Manage your sugar cravings in 3 easy steps
 by Kaiser Permanente | June 20, 2023
Person shopping for vegetables at a grocery store

Some days it feels like sugary temptations are everywhere — a co-worker brings donuts into the office, you’re offered a slice of birthday cake, or your lunch comes with a free soda. But too much sugar can take a toll on your body. It can increase your risk of weight gain, type 2 diabetes, and heart disease.* Managing sugar cravings is an important part of staying healthy. Try this 3-step process to help satisfy your sweet tooth while also giving your body the nutrients it needs to thrive.

Step 1: Prevention The best way to beat a sugar craving is to avoid it. But that’s easier said than done. The good news is you’ll be less likely to develop a craving — whether it’s for a piece of pie or a fast-food burger — if you keep your body satiated with healthy foods and nutrients throughout the day. This means making sure each meal has a balance of lean protein, whole grains, and vegetables. When it comes to snacking between meals, pick nutritious treats like celery and peanut butter, roasted chickpeas, seaweed chips, or rainbow carrots and pumpkin hummus. You’ll also want to stay hydrated. Our brains will often mistake thirst for hunger. So before reaching for a snack, try drinking a glass of water and then see how you feel.

Step 2: Substitutions Not all sweet treats are created equal. In general, it’s best to avoid refined sugar and processed foods, like candy bars, sodas, and baked goods. But that doesn’t mean you can’t have anything sugary. So, before reaching for a cookie, try one of these substitutes: Berries Berries — like strawberries, raspberries, and blackberries — are naturally sweet and contain low amounts of sugar. They’re also full of good-for-you nutrients like fiber, vitamins, and antioxidants. So go ahead and reach for a handful of berries when the next craving strikes. Dark chocolate
If you crave chocolate, skip the milk chocolate candy bar and grab a piece of rich dark chocolate instead. Look for options that contain more than 70% cocoa to get a boost of fiber, antioxidants, and magnesium. But keep in mind that dark chocolate also contains refined sugar and fat, so try to stick to 1 or 2 squares. Plain yogurt Plain, unsweetened yogurt is a great base for a healthy dessert. It provides probiotics, healthy fats, and protein, and you can control the amount of sweetness you add to it. For a treat that feels like a splurge, mix 1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder into 1/2 cup plain Greek yogurt. You can then add fruit, seeds (chia seeds are a great choice), or nuts. If you want to sweeten it up more, add a dollop of honey or maple syrup. Sweet potatoes Naturally sweet and packed with fiber, vitamins, and minerals, sweet potatoes can help you satisfy a sugar craving. For a simple treat, bake a sweet potato and then top it with a dash of sunflower seed oil, cinnamon, and nutmeg.

Step 3: Moderation Sometimes it’s OK to indulge — just make sure you’re doing it in moderation. Here are a few tips to help you stay on track: Grab a smaller serving: Think fun-size over king-size. Split a restaurant dessert with your friend. Try just a bite. The smaller you go, the less sugar you’ll consume. Don’t keep it in the house: Easy access can lead to bingeing. Avoid stocking up on treats at home. You’ll be less likely to eat several servings of cookies if you need to go out to get them. Space it out: Eating a treat every night? Try switching to every other night, then every 2 nights, then once a week. Keep slowly spacing it out until you get used to having less.

Sherrie Miranda's "Crimes & Impunity in New Orleans" follows the dramatic story of naive, sheltered Shelly going to “The Big Easy” to prepare for El Salvador, but has no idea she will encounter sexism and witness racism as well as illegal activities by government agents. https://www.amzn.com/dp/B08KMHNNDK

Review: Shelly’s journey in “the city that care forgot.” Sherrie Miranda’s new novel “Crimes and Impunity in New Orleans” puts the reader into a whirlwind of political protests, abusive police, sexist attitudes towards women, and “good old boys” racism in 1980’s New Orleans. Miranda’s second novel follows Shelly, the young northerner, as she quickly finds out that she “isn’t in Kansas anymore” while encountering a slew of picturesque, colorful characters. Reading her book makes you wonder if justice and respect for blacks, immigrants, and women can be reality in America.

How to Lose Two Pants Sizes in Three Weeks

http://www.livestrong.com/article/340590-how-many-pounds-do-i-need-to-lose-to-go-down-one-pant-size/
I was doing quite well until we took a 2 week vacation, then came back & got our entire house painted. I found myself not even thinking about what I was putting in my mouth. Conscious eating is definitely key! ~SM

by JACQUES COURSEAULT
How to Lose Two Pants Sizes in Three Weeks
Losing two pants sizes in three weeks is a reasonable goal that can be accomplished with committed changes to your diet and exercise habits. Specifically, reducing your caloric intake, eating healthier foods and burning calories with physical activity will help you lose weight around your waist to reduce two pants sizes. Additional health benefits to losing two pants sizes include a decreased risk for chronic diseases, such as heart disease, diabetes and certain cancers. Follow specific techniques to lose weight and reduce your pants sizes.

Step 1
Decrease your caloric intake to lose two pants sizes. Additional calories you take in are stored as fat if not used for bodily functions or physical activity. Therefore, reducing the amount of calories you consume will result in fat loss and a reduction in pants size. According to Medline Plus, you must have a 3,500-calorie deficit to lose 1 lb. of fat. If you reduce your intake by 500 calories per day for seven days, you will lose 1 lb. of fat per week. Over three weeks, you will lose 3 lbs. of fat just from dietary changes alone.

Step 2
Choose more low-calorie, vitamin-rich foods to lose two pants sizes in three weeks. As you begin your diet to lose weight, you must build a healthy foundation and learn to consume healthier foods, such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, lean meats and low-fat dairy products. If you commit to eating these foods, you might eat larger portions without taking in an excessive amount of calories. Follow the USDA's recommendations, which say half your plate should contain fruits and vegetables, one fourth whole grains and one fourth lean proteins per meal. Avoid high-calorie beverages, such as sodas, juices and sweetened teas.

Step 3
Exercise regularly to burn additional calories to lose two pants sizes. Set a goal to participate in at least 30 minutes per day of aerobic exercise, five to seven days per week. The more aerobic exercise you perform, the more likely you will reach your goal of losing two pants sizes in three weeks. Make sure you exercise at a moderately high to high intensity to burn calories more efficiently. Try speed walking, jogging, biking or swimming. Avoid leisurely aerobic exercise, which might not be as effective in helping you achieve your goal.
Warnings

Check with your doctor before beginning an exercise program, particularly if you have health problems.
Tips

Individuals lose weight at varying rates depending on body type. Be patient in your weight loss efforts. If you improve your diet and exercise habits, you will reach your goal eventually.

Welcome to Weight Loss Coach Sherrie's Blog!

WELCOME EVERYONE. It is time to learn a "NEW WAY OF BEING IN THE WORLD."
I am currently trying a new way of eating (forget about that nasty "D" word!). I am following the "Schwarzbein Principle" and learning ways to focus on creativity and taking care of ME. I am currently in Body Blissmas, a program started by Jill Badonsky. As I learn to focus on healthy eating and being happy and creative, I would like to help you do the same.

Are you currently trying to lose weight?
