The New You (Cont. from previous article)

A Leap of Imagination

Breakthrough number two occurred during another study with the NWCR volunteers. When Treitler listened to subjects' stories, something stood out: They'd all gone through an inner transformation almost like those celebrated in traditional rites of passage. Each had found a coach, mentor, or guide for the journey, had pulled back and separated somewhat from his or her old environment, and then was "reborn" into a different way of life.

At this point, the newly thin person became a leader rather than a follower, a change that opened the door to further goals and achievements, often in fields completely unrelated to weight loss. (One subject, for example, asked a chef at the university where he worked to develop an aggressive diet for him, dropped nearly half his body weight, then took a leave from his job to help start a law school in Africa, where he reemerged as a passionate long-distance walker and bird-watcher.)

"All the subjects had incorporated some meditative element into their lives," Treitler says. "It might have been walking or yoga, but it was self time, a white space where they could disengage from the old, obsessive behavior." This transformation of identity appears crucial in keeping weight off. Without a new self who's clearly different from the old, overweight one, it's too easy to revert to former unhealthy habits. Can you reprogram your brain?

What You Focus On Makes All the Difference!

The Mind of the Successful Dieter
By Carol Mithers

How are you at sticking to a diet? Getting to the gym? Keeping doctors' appointments? A potentially groundbreaking study says that how well you take care of yourself depends on which corner of your brain tends to be more active. The good news: You can retrain your mind.

In the battle against fat, the heroes achieve what most of us only long for—lasting weight loss. They're so unusual, they've become the subjects of ongoing research by scientists trying to finger just what it is that makes them stand out from the rest of dieting humanity. The project is called the National Weight Control Registry (NWCR) and was created 12 years ago by researchers at Brown University and the University of Colorado in the face of the well-known and defeating statistic: Ninety-five percent of dieters gain their weight back. Registrants—some 4,500—must have dropped at least 30 pounds and kept them off for a year or more, though the average member has lost twice that much and maintained it for about five years.

In one of the latest studies, Inga Treitler, PhD, a cultural anthropologist, and a fellow researcher intensely interviewed and observed 10 of the registrants, focusing not on what they ate or did for exercise but on how they lived—the books they read, the photos they kept, their pets, careers, friends, and hobbies—before and after the weight loss.

Lessons Learned From Walking the Labyrinth

Walking the Labyrinth
by Naomi Colb

It is said that the gates to enlightenment are guarded by the twin dragons of paradox and confusion.

I often walk the labyrinth, outside of Grace Cathedral located on the top of Nob Hill in San Francisco. While I walk, I do my best to breathe deeply and open my 5 senses to receive each moment from 360 degrees.I experience gratitude that I am walking easily and all my senses are working well....and...with a mind cleared of the static of everyday doing.

Walking the labyrinth, I am often gifted with lessons that allow me to move beyond the conflict between good and bad, dark and light, into the creative flow of living. I am OPEN to moving out of my darkness into the LIGHT.

Here are a few Lessons I have learned walking this sacred pattern:

1. Sacred is a human distinction. All of creation is sacred. Pigeons and humans...we are all creations of the one creator.
2. Birth and Death are the great levelers. In the Labyrinth, we ALL enter and exit exactly the same way....just like birth and death. The half way point in the center of the Labyrinth comes at a different time for for each of us, depending on our pacing.
3. Presence = Presents + Gratitude + Appreciation. How many people, plants and other creatures contributeto my moment to moment experience on my journey? All of creation is here to share their presents of presence.
I use my walk to move out of the darkness of preoccupation
and disconnection, into the light of mindfulness and gratitude for the wealth of each moment with each step.
4.Certainty
I will arrive at my final destination. No way to get lost, if I simply stay on my own path. Spirit is guiding my steps one breath at a time. I am literally receiving inspiration from respiration. There is no way to do this wrong. Life is one foot in front of the other.
5. Receiving and Giving
On my way toward the center of the labyrinth, I receive the wisdom of the Universe in general or listen for the solution to a specific situation. In the center, I express gratitude and respect for whatever I have received with some simple ritual. Then I go forth from the center and share whatever gifts I have received!
6. Non - attachment
People enter my life and walk beside me for a while...then go their own way, on their own evolutionary path...just as they do here, on the Labyrinth.
7. Freedom
I am free to walk at my own pace in my own style, no matter who is watching.
With the Labryinth, I remember that I am a multi-dimensional being connected both to the center of the earth and the limitless reaches of the universe

Live In the Now!

Why Therapy?

Why Therapy?
Talk your way to happiness
by Calliope Hart

You call your coach hoping that they would see that dark cloud of unhappiness that's been shadowing you for a while now… finally moving on. But instead of foreseeing a more productive, happier life for you, they've been predicting more of the same.

Use your free will they've advised… take some time, look inside, make some changes. Intuitively you may know they're right. But maybe, despite the best of advice from friends or loved ones, that pile of self-help books you've just poured through… you're still stuck, unhappy, and behaving in a manner that isn't productive. Perhaps it's time to consider therapy.

Maybe it's not you! Why me?
Because therapy is all about making changes. It's about looking into what's going on right now in your present and making changes so you can look forward to a better future - the one you were hoping the psychics saw, all mapped out for you including, love, happiness and success. But wait…. isn't therapy for people with really big problems, you ask?

Actually, therapy is for relatively healthy, high-functioning people, who are stuck. Choosing to go to therapy can be considered to be an act of sanity, because as crazy as it sounds, staying stuck, resisting help, continuing to live with self-sabotaging behavior, impossible situations or relationships, or emotional pain and unhappiness can appear to be easier and more comfortable than facing problems.

Be courageous
Therapy takes personal courage. Yes, some people are frightened by the prospect of looking inside themselves deeply and intimately, because they're afraid of the unknown. But what does anyone have to lose, if their life's not working, anyway. In therapy you will consciously work to find, identify and change the things which are inhibiting your life's progess. It's an education into what make's you uniquely you - how you think, what you believe and what you feel. Plus, research proves that it is successful - and it lasts!

Consider therapy a gift to yourself and your future - an indulgence, even. From personal experience, many people can attest to it leading to immense personal happiness. Just like any education, it can help you evolve and live a richer life. In therapy, you will spend 50 minutes a week with a supportive person, who is trained and licensed to help you find solutions to those things in your life that are blocking you from living a more satisfying life.

Only you
It's a process of talking about the issues you want to work on - anxiety, depression, irritability, why you can't sleep or find love, or maybe even what's stopping you from sitting down to write the great American novel, lose weight or adjust to life as a new parent.

The choice of subject is yours. Anything goes. Some therapists specialize in specifics like sex, marriage, anger management, anxiety or depression. But in general, therapy can be about anything you want to talk about - the excitement is where it can lead you!

Be honest
The poignant thing about talk therapy is that you have to be unfalteringly honest in therapy. Sometimes that hurts, and sometimes that makes therapy very emotional. It can take some uncomfortable probing and unraveling to become aware of your unconscious agendas, convoluted beliefs and unproductive behaviors that are keeping you from living your best life.

You see, the more you understand about what's going on inside your head, the more control you have over what you do. With the insight and the coping skills you pick up in psychotherapy, you can learn to understand yourself as you really are - you can learn to see what you're doing as if you're watching yourself from a distance. The goal is to look at your behavior, work out your discomfort and unhappiness and learn to manage your behavior and your feelings - or anything else that interferes with your ability to live happily.

What's exciting is that changing little things in your life over the course of therapy can make a huge difference in your life in general. As one therapist, describes to his clients as a metaphor for how therapy works and the subtlety with which you will start seeing improvement, "You don't need to throw a boulder into a pool of water to make a big splash. If you throw in a pebble, the small ripple from the pebble will turn into a series of larger, meaningful ripples."

Coach Sherrie says: Sometimes it takes some therapy whether it be individual or group to get you to the point where you're ready to let go of the past and move on. All I can say is IT WORKED FOR ME. If you've worked through your major issues or are one of the lucky ones who doesn't have any, then you're ready for a coach.

Lisa Dieken Talks About Taking Risks

Taking Risks

Recently I was reading the book "What We Ache For" by Oriah Mountain Dreamer and found some questions that really struck me:

"Am I hedging at all? What am I holding back? What don't I want to write or paint or explore? What am I refusing to risk?"

How can you practice taking risks and not holding back, either in your creativity or in your life?
What one small way can you "go for the gusto" today?

Coach Sherrie reminds: Just do ONE Small thing.

Healing AND FLYING~~~~

Oprah says "Find 10 minutes!"

"If you can find a little window each day to do something for yourself -- and who doesn't have 10 minutes? -- whether it's doing yoga, meditating, or fixing a nutritious lunch, you'll feel a difference that will make you want to pry another 10 minutes from your schedule. And then another. You see where we're going."

Coach Sherrie says: If you can find 10 minutes; make it 5. Just get started and everything will fall into place. Dr. Maurer says to run in place during the commercials when your watching TV. What great use of that otherwise wasted time. And maybe you won't notice all the commercials for junk food that make you want to run to the kitchen!

Create A Place to Manifest!

Your Sacred Home
Create a place to manifest!
by M. McMahon

Your home is more than just an address. It's a breathing, living spiritual cove where it is your choice to create harmony or leave it in a state of unease. If you create a home that will comfort and sustain you in your busy life - a place that gives you peace in your heart - that energy will extend to the world around you and attract likeminded souls (and soulmates!).

How is your home doing today?
When you enter it, do you feel relieved or tense? If you are not walking into well-being when you walk into your home, that's okay. Be gentle with yourself. Write a list of things - achievable things - that you would like to change. Perhaps you would like to paint a wall or de-clutter a closet. When you have listed everything out, don't rush to do it all at once. You will get through the list in time. Let your mind relax and enjoy the journey. Think of your home as constantly evolving and improving to reflect who you really are (or who you are striving to be).

Make an altar just for you
Pick a spot in your home to build an altar. What are your hopes and dreams? Is there a part of you that has not been honored in your life so far? Allow objects to present themselves to you. Whatever you are drawn to is the right thing. Allow your personal altar to take shape in time. As something comes to you, place it in your special corner, hallway, bay window or top of a dresser. Perhaps you gravitate towards a brightly colored vase because you are an artist or a beautiful leaf you picked up on a hike. It can be a postcard from your travels (or someone else's), matches from a favorite restaurant or romantic night out, a mini Buddha or sculpture. Whatever objects make sense to you, they are the right ones. Make sure you have at least one candle and a place for incense.

A time to reflect
Give yourself time each day to look at, pick up, and hold these objects that symbolize your past, hopes and desires. Light your candle and incense to create sacred energy from your reflections. Sit quietly and allow your inner harmony with these objects to radiate through you so you can carry this harmony throughout your entire home.

Think bigger
As you allow small objects to create sacred energy, you open yourself up to receive bigger ones for your home. Allow your inner peace to guide you toward transforming all of your surroundings piece by piece to a space that puts you, and those who enter it, at ease. Give yourself the gift of creating a home that brings you to peace each time you enter it. Reduce stimulation and clutter. Bring in colors that you like and objects that are useful and aesthetically pleasing. Take a few things off the wall if there is too much or hang one piece of art that inspires you. Think about objects that represent violence and consider if you really want to keep them out.

Remember, opening up your home is a gradual evolution. If you continue to be mindful of it as a sacred space where you align yourself with the universe and all the good intentions therein, you're on your way.

Unearth your values with a guide and allow our gifted psychics to open you up to all the good things your home can hold. By honoring the inner you, you will transform yourself and your home.
